Activity Modification

Depending on your condition there may be a range of simple activities which can improve your symptoms. Conversely, there will activities which you would do well to avoid.

Weight Loss

If your weight is significantly higher than it should be—you may be advised to lose weight before your procedure.

Physiotherapy

Your local physio should be closely involved in optimising your condition. Speak to them about your diagnosis.

Strength & Conditioning Programs

Generic exercise programs are available to help with knee conditioning for all patients. For elite athletes, your club S&C coach will guide your return to sport once you have surgeon & physio clearance.

Fish Oil

Omega-3 fats may help reduce inflammation in some forms of arthritis. Make sure you take the right dose and keep your GP informed if you commence this medication.

Glucosamine & Chondoitin

Glucosamine is a sugar naturally produced by the body and is a constituent of joint cartilage. Chondroitin is also a natural substance found in the body. It is believed to help draw water and nutrients into joint cartilage, keeping it spongy and healthy.

Paracetamol

Paracetamol is a cheap and simple pain reliever that may ease mild to moderate pain. Speak to your GP about trialing this medication.

NSAIDs

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may reduce inflammation, joint swelling and stiffness. Speak to your GP about trialing this medication.

Plasma Injection

Much has been written about a preparation called platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and its potential effectiveness in the treatment of injuries.

Steroid Injection

Corticosteroid injections lower local levels of prostaglandins and have a consequent anti-inflammatory effect which may ease your pain.

Viscosupplementation Injection

The theory is that an injection of hyaluronic acid directly into the arthritic joint will facilitate movement and reduce pain.

Stem Cell Injection

Dr Nicholls does not advocate the use of stem cell therapy in orthopaedic management.

Knee Braces

There are a range of braces available for osteoarthritis. In addition, there are sports braces which are specific to different injury patterns.
